Late show with Wynne and Greaterkind

Fri, Sep 19

TICKETS $15 | 21+ PLEASE In this unprecedented concert, Portland rapper Wynne is joining forces with some of the city's most talented musicians to perform six shows across town at the end of September. Backed by Greaterkind, one of Portland’s premier jazz bands, Wynne will perform innovative musical arrangements of fan-favorites from her catalog. This show at The 1905 will feature an opening set by Mal London, an emerging R&B artist with a genre-bending style and a rich musical background. Wynne will deliver a unique performance, bringing together her high-energy lyrical performance and Greaterkind's virtuosic playing - this is surely not one to miss. Wynne is one of Hip-Hop’s most remarkable rising stars. Born Sina Wynne Holwerda in 1997, and growing up an outcast in Lake Oswego, a suburb of Portland, Oregon, she gravitated towards Hip-Hop at the age of nine. Studying the greats from afar, and dedicating her life to becoming a rapper by the age of 12, she established herself in the underground scene by competing in national cyphers. Soaking up influence from the greats of generations past (Jay-Z, Dilla, Foxy Brown, and the list goes on), as well as modern paragons like SZA and Drake, Wynne became a phenom by the age of 19, going viral several times and blowing the internet away with her veteran-level rapping. She quickly started gaining co-signs from some of music’s titans (Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Twista, Wyclef Jean) and cultural gatekeepers like Rob Markman and Zane Lowe, among several others. At 21 years old Wynne graduated college after four years of studying music and social justice, and released her debut mixtape “If I May..,” boasting assists from several A-list producers such as Hit-Boy, DJ Dahi, and Sounwave, as well as features from J.I.D, Mahalia, and fellow hometown hero, Damian Lillard. This took her on a sold-out tour with Earthgang and Mick Jenkins at the top of 2020. Through the early 2020s, she dropped an experimental EP with Dreamville super-producer Christo, along with a dozen singles, garnering millions of streams as she shepherded fans towards her new sound, ending the year with a viral hit, “Look At You.”

Mel Brown B3 Organ Group

Mel Brown B3 Organ Group

Sun, Sep 28

TICKETS $30 - ALL AGES "If this band appeared in New York City, they'd be a sensation!" That was guitar great--and one-time Mel Brown bandmate--George Benson's reaction after hearing the Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group open for him back in September, 2003 at Oregon's prestigious Britt Festival. In fact, this true all-star band--each member is widely viewed as tops in the Northwest on his instrument--has been a sensation for a long while now. With a collective resume that reads like a "Who's Who" of jazz, blues, and soul (all four members are Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductees), this group has the talent and confidence to be completely spontaneous--from their blistering solos to their improvised arrangements and segues. No wonder they've thrilled audiences wherever they've played.

Christopher Brown Quartet

Christopher Brown Quartet

Wed, Oct 01

$25 TICKETS | ALL AGES Upon Christopher Brown’s return to Portland in 2012—which was preceded by 13 years in the NYC area, as well as four years in the Marine Corps—the assemblage of his quartet quickly became one of note. And by 2017, his quartet had officially become the most visible Jazz group in all of Portland, with a steady weekly cadence of 3-4 performances, which was maintained until the start of the global pandemic. And even then, it took them no more than three months to return to a similar weekly performance schedule. Since 2017, the quartet has created a home for themselves at the famed 1905 Jazz club in Portland. And through their regular performances, they’ve not only helped to raise the profile of the venue to one of the world’s top 100 Jazz clubs according to Down Beat Magazine, but of Jazz itself in Portland. So in a market where it's difficult to maintain group's with the same personnel, it's arguable that the Christopher Brown Quartet succeeds as being one of (if not the best) Jazz "group" in all of Portland, which in turn gives them such a powerful, polished, and identifiable sound.
